Event marks park named for Levetan dedicated

The story:
DeKalb County officials will dedicate a north county park Sunday in the name of former county Chief Executive Officer Liane Levetan.

The current CEO, Vernon Jones, and members of the county Board of Commissioners are expected to attend the event at Brook Run Park, which is being renamed Liane Levetan Park at Brook Run.

Levetan has said she was "flattered" by the recognition.

"When Mr. Jones called me a few weeks ago, I was overwhelmed," she said in a September interview after the commission voted to rename the park after her.

Jones has said Levetan deserves the honor because of her work leading the county for eight years (she was CEO from 1993 through 2000) and because she helped create the park during that time.

Levetan served as a state senator after her maximum two terms as CEO. She no longer holds office but is still active in civic life.

Recently, at the request of Jones, she served on a panel that selected candidates for the vacant county chief of police job.

Sunday's event will include a performance by the Callanwolde Concert Band under the direction of Raymond Handfield. Kosher hotdogs will be served.

The park is at 4770 N. Peachtree Road in Dunwoody. Festivities begin at 4 p.m.
